People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use.
Soren Kierkegaard (1813 - 1855)
Now I know what a statesman is; he's a dead politician. We need more statesmen.
Bob Edwards
"The most dangerous man, to any government, is the man who is able to think things out for himself, without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos. Almost invariably he comes to the conclusion that the government he lives under is dishonest, insane and intolerable, and so, if he is romantic, he tries to change it. And if he is not romantic personally, he is apt to spread discontent among those who are." - H. L. Mencken (1880-1956)
"The catch-all phrase "the war on terrorism", in all honesty, has no more meaning than if one wants to wage a war against "criminal gangsterism". Terrorism is a tactic. You can't have a war against a tactic. It's deliberately vague and non-definable in order to justify and permit perpetual war anywhere and under any circumstance." - Congressman Ron Paul, Republican, 14th district Texas, from a speech given on the house floor, 2007
"My final point about alcohol, about drugs, about Pornography...What business is it of yours what I do, read, buy, see or take into my body as long as I don't harm another human being whilst on this planet? And for those of you having a little moral dilemma on how to answer this, I'll answer for you. NONE OF YOUR FUCKING BUSINESS! Take that to the bank, cash it and take it on a vacation outta my fucking life." - Bill Hicks, Comedian
"A professional politician is a professionally dishonorable man. In order to get anywhere near high office he has to make so many compromises and submit to so many humiliations that he becomes indistinguishable from a streetwalker." - H.L. Mencken

we are fighting a legal battle in france.
Sorry, i'm off-topic.
I'm a long-time user, but it's not so important. What is important is that i'm french. I'm interested to know more about this, and why not talking a little about it on the french part of the internet if it's not an "handicap" for the battle. (i write sometimes some things on webzines).
Cultural policy is actually a pain in France. I think you will not have the time to answer me personnaly. But for first the time since 2002, i have the opportunity to say you : thanks, thanks and thanks for soulseek. Music, Lab30, friends, chatting, etc., it's one of my best experience in my all "internet-life". It brings me a lot of great moments in my all life, not only virtual.

nir, if you're not getting anything out of Soulseek and it's apparently a chore for you to maintain, why not merge Soulseek with Nicotine+? This would lift the burden from you, and you could still control the direction of the project.
i think you'll find that running the servers is the burden... as long as the clients connecting to it work and don't hinder the network performance.. they're irrelevent really. to the running of the network that is, not to the users.

this is the best explanation of soulseek and your motivation i've read to date. i, like many, have had criticisms over the years... this (at least for me) hits something of a reset button.well, i took the "test" out of the client's name and renamed it NS (new server). i've also set the initial room join message on the main server to advertise it and sent an admin message to do the same. i understand your frustration regarding the two separate servers, but merging them is just not an option that's technically available to us right now. the best i can recommend to you right now is to either use both clients at the same time, or use the new client by default and try the older one when you can't find what you're looking for. as for bots flooding, i can only recommend private rooms on the new server for now, and i'll be adding selective private messaging features to the next NS client that will allow you to only receive PMs from friends and ask for confirmation (or ignore altogether) from anyone else. i would also like to address some of the anger regarding nicotine being a much better client. we have no problem with people using nicotine instead. i have no problem with someone else writing a better client. i'm not primarily a user-interface developer, i had to develop both the server and the client, and if another client makes better use of the network then so be it. if you're happy with your third part client then more power to you. if you don't want to support us by donating, for any reason including but not limited to not thinking we deserve to stay alive then that's perfectly fine. enjoy the system for free, as 99.98% of you have for as long as soulseek's been up. if it's our time to go we will go quietly. i would also like to take this opportunity to address some of the lies that have been spread about our lifestyle and the money we make off soulseek. we live from hand to mouth. a few months ago we had to let go of sierracat, our system admin, despite his excellent work, because we could no longer afford his services. we are pretty heavily in debt. we are fighting a legal battle in france. we are not poor nor starving, but neither of us drives a fancy car nor could we begin to afford one if we wanted to. i don't like discussing money issues, but i feel it necessary to defend ourselves from accusations that are, and have always been, patently untrue. with that, i would like to thank you all for using soulseek and making it a significant, if not hugely popular or successful experience. thanks, nir
thanks for taking a moment.

Thank you for the kind words and your ongoing support. I would be happy to talk to you about the current case(s). The main one is regarding the SCPP, and we have a new court date set for September of this year. We would love our French users to know all about this, as the SCPP claims that Soulseek was created exclusively to infringe upon copyright and that we intentionally lure French users to infringe upon French copyright. After much haggling with the EFF, and a long search for pro bono legal counsel in France, we managed to get in contact with HUGOTAVOCATS. They explained that France does not do pro bono legal counsel, but they gave us a greatly reduced price for a retainer. However, the conversion rate for euros is not kind to us currently, and it still is ending up costing us a pretty penny. If you would like to talk with me further about this in private, please message me on slsk (either client) and I will give you all of the details. If you could bring this info to the French slsk community, it would be great! :slsk:

Anyway: Just close the old server. Nobody is going to miss it. Give a month d-time so that the nicotine dudes can handle accordingly. Perhaps replace it with a server message and disconnect. The old server needs to go. The search width is just going to earn on it. I see no reason to keep to the old server. Everyone managed to upgrade to a newer client previously.
And frankly, I hope imagination can bring where the next step of soulseek can go. It has traction, and it can be used for good.
But I fear that the next few steps would have to be radical. You get my gist? Rarely are people ready for anything radical.
*Disclaimer: Honest, but with awe. This network is the best. I have learnt so much about LEGAL music here.

And at the time of this posting it appears as if you have taken the plunge and made upgrades mandatory!

I wanted to say a big Thank You to nir and the other developers for all their work on this awesome program. It sounds like it can kind of be an "all guts and no glory" thing working on Slsk, but I can tell you from my experiences and that of other users that the payoff is huge...
Without Slsk, I wouldn't have met (or reconnected with!) several friends who have become dear to me. And why are we such good friends - because we share the same eclectic taste in music and music is a big part of our lives. The Rooms are to me what sets Slsk apart so much, that and the generosity of users - I meet people from literally around the world in different rooms, yet we have so much in common, Slsk makes stuff like that possible.
Like, for example, have you ever seen someone d/l from you some obscure song/band/composer and you think "hey cool"....then you browse their share and they have this huge collection of their music?! One of those "eureka! I'm-not-alone" moments that are so cool to have in life. Thank you, Slsk, for that.
And also thank you Slsk for being a vehicle for us users to discover music we didn't even know existed, or is brand-new literally wet on the page - that is where this kind of service is priceless. For the discovery of newly created music. And for broadening horizons - Slsk friends recommend stuff to you that you would never have tried yourself - and you like it! Love it even!
As for the servers - be patient, it will work itself out - hopefully the planned outage went well, I know I saw a few old friends pop up, having migrated, during the outage. Nudged along, people will finally read/follow the steps to move their settings and get it figured out. We were also helping users in chat rooms with their issues - people come together.
The problems with different OS may take time, but workarounds will be devised. Everything's not perfect yet, but it's getting better all the time - just as Slsk has always endeavoured to do.
Honestly, I think the NS adds some features that can really strengthen the community. Like in a situation, where a room that had a ton of users, many people didn't know anyone, and random spammers were what usually filtered through the chat room. Now in a private room, people seriously interested in the topic of the room are invited by others, and it grows - now people actually chat in the chatroom, share more of their stuff as they feel they can trust the others, and we are like a body of friends who share interests, rather than just faceless entities trading bits of data.
The only, only problem I have run into - which is regarding private rooms - is no way for Mac users to be invited into private rooms, well, without going through a bunch of workaround hoops. I don't know much about Macs and how that all works, but hopefully there will be a better solution for them sometime.
But yeah, there's my little Slsk spiel - and again, thanks so much to nir and the developers for their continuing work, and the ingenious design of Slsk in the first place. BRAVO! :worshippy:

A fine guide - which can be easily adapted to other clients - has been posted on the ssX subforum: http://forums.slskne...showtopic=21280
I'm sad to hear sierracat is out of the team, he did such a great lot of work. Nice guy aswell.

add: Have just installed very painless.
Renamed current programs folder to new beta version (with slsk closed).
Installed into that directory, sent slsk exe to desktop to replace the older one.
run slsk and all is as it should be, no problem. Though my list is very few only a handful, as i'm still also using 156c. Will change when the new server has same or more than old server on it. Or that should be when everyone migrates to the new server by using the new betas.
Ah it would be nice nir if userlist button was back on the main gui. After using older version forever it is natural to be there.
I thank you Sir Nir for slsk new betas, new hope
